Symantec's State of Green IT 2009"Perhaps in the past [green IT] was a wish-list item, it's now essential for almost all the companies we surveyed," explained Jose Iglesias, Symantec's vice president of global solutions. More telling is that the survey found that budgets for green it have been rising:. . ."One of the reasons that budgets are increasing is because the typical respondent is paying $21 to 27 million per year in electricity use," Iglesias said, "so going after reducing the electricity consumption will pay for itself."
In addition to the boost in green IT budgets, almost all respondents have begun discussing a green IT strategy -- 97 percent said it was on their radar, and 45 percent of the companies in the survey had already put a strategy into action. The motivations for these projects were evenly split between cost savings and energy conservation, both with 92 percent of respondents ranking as important, and 86 percent put environmental responsibility as a key driver for green goals.

Clean Energy and Climate Policy for U.S. Growth and Job Creation
This study finds that a robust climate bill could boost the U.S. economy by about $111 billion by 2020 and create as many as 1.9 million jobs. The report is by David Roland-Holst and Friedrich Kahrl of the University of California, Berkeley, in collaboration with Madhu Khanna of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Jennifer Baka of Yale University. Their findings run contrary to claims made by opponents of climate legislation in the U.S. Senate. The team's analysis issued in late October 2009 offers a state-by-state look at the economic implications posed by comprehensive federal climate policy.
The study's key findings are:
The country as a whole can gain 918,000 to 1.9 million jobs, and household income can grow by $488 to $1,176, by 2020 under comprehensive energy and climate policy. By aggressively promoting efficiency on the demand side of energy markets, alternative fuel and renewable technology development on the supply side can be combined with carbon pollution reduction to yield economic growth and net job creation. Indeed, a central finding of this research is that the stronger the federal climate policy, the greater the economic reward.
